I got Grand Theft Auto 5 a couple weekends ago and as I was walking down one of the streets exploring, that’s right walking not driving since I was trying to increase my stamina, I came across a Save-a-Cent discount supermarket store. It is basically the GTA version of a dollar store. The signs on the side of the building say they have a “special price on all items” and that “for every dollar you spend, we refund you 1 cent guaranteed”. It is a supermarket so they have cheap and tasty things like fruit, seafood, meat and veg. At Save-a-Cent, you spend more and save less, which is the opposite of what you actually want. It is one of the little jokes they throw into the game. The one I found is located on Vespucci Blvd in Little Seoul next to the Lucky Plucker restaurant that is opening soon, but other known locations include Westminster at the corner of Galveston and Jade and in Fishmarket North at the corner of Albany and Feldspar. I haven’t even found those areas yet. You can’t enter the stores at all so they are just to look at and get a chuckle out of them. Now I am wondering if they had anything like that in GTA 4 since that one had a large area to...

Dollar Zone is a discount store that opened up recently where the SM Discount and Dollar Store used to be. I can’t remember how many things I actually got at the SM Discount store, but I think it was only one Star Wars: The Phantom Menace item I am saving for a special occasion. The logo on the building has the same green background and yellow letter coloring as Dollarama. I went into the Dollar Zone store and the layout seemed to be the same as the SM Discount and Dollar Store layout so they could have just closed down and changed the name. I only had a few minutes to look around, since I was getting pizza from a place in the plaza, and I didn’t really find anything unique, stupid or just plain funny so I left empty handed. There is always that hope of finding something really funny at the smaller stores, but not this time. The only thing of note worth mentioning, that I find funny, is in regards to some of the merchandise on the shelves for sale. They had stickers from Buck or Two stores on them. It is one thing for dollar stores to sell toys that weren’t sold at normal stores so they ship them to dollar stores, but it’s another thing for dollar stores to be selling other dollar store merchandise with the stickers from the other dollar store still on them. I was too lazy to take a picture of the store so you will just have to imagine it in all its...

Discount stores generally supply wares for adults and toys for children, but the teenager group is usually left with very little to choose from. That is, unless you go to a Five Below, a value store for teenagers. They have over 80 stores and they offer thousands of trendy products for teens or pre-teens including sporting goods, fashion accessories and games. Selling just about anything a teenager might be looking for, they also supply other wares such as computer software, multimedia accessories and room decor. One thing you probably won’t find here is toys. They just aren’t something teenagers are looking for. Their name comes from their pricing scheme, nothing over five dollars. They boast you won’t pay more than five dollars for the highest quality and trendiest items out there. Not having been there, I can’t confirm nor deny that claim. Their tagline is “Hot Stuff. Cool Prices” and it’s basically a play on temperature. Their name and even their logo has a temperature related feel to it. The “O” in “below” is designed like the degree symbol and the white and blue coloring makes you think of cold, five below. If you’re looking for a store near you, they have a handy store locator on their website here. You can search using your zip code and set a range of miles around that zip code or you can search by state, by selected one of the eight states available, and find all stores located in that state. Anyone been there and can give it a thumbs up or thumbs...

This isn’t a post about the economy and financial situations, but rather a post about a local dollar store I visited called Dollar Power. Although, in the spirit of economic and financial situations, it was about a year ago that the Canadian dollar matched the American dollar. The Dollar Power store is one of the smaller stores and I only happened onto it by chance. It was haircut time so I went to my usual place in the southern part of the city, which happens to have a Buck or Two store in the same plaza. After my haircut, I usually stop into the Buck or Two store to see if they got anything new for me to rip on. It was all the usual stuff, nothing new and nothing I wanted to pick up when I have several other dollar store toys at home I could actually get around to doing, so I left. As I made a right out of the plaza, heading toward a major intersection, there was a car accident complete with police cars and other emergency vehicles. I didn’t want to end up at the intersection whether it was blocked or not and I had only a few moments before it was too late. There was one more turn into the plaza on the other side of the street and I quickly made a left into it in order to take a different route home. As I was driving along the stores to the other exit of the plaza, there it was, Dollar Power. I just had to stop to see what they had since I probably wouldn’t have stopped by there again. It was a typical smaller store. About three cramped aisles and much of the usual stuff. I found the toy wall and after some time spent decided, I picked up a few new “interesting” items. I got items for the action figure category, gadgets category and the artillery category. They haven’t been posted yet, but soon, very...

Another discount dollar store based in Canada is Buck or Two, full name Buck or Two Extreme Retail, Inc. Founded in the late 1980s, early 1990’s, the company is based in Concord Ontario and has over 300 stores across Canada, including Quebec where you’ll find them named in French “Dollar ou Deux“. The Buck or Two has many items for a dollar, but some are normally priced two dollars. The occasional product is priced more than two dollars, as with other dollar stores, but generally you’re going to find cheaper priced items. Buck or Two has a wide variety of party decorations, school supplies, toys and household items. They also have special deals on some items and stock seasonal products as well. Most of the Buck or Two stores are franchises and franchises are available for anyone who is interested in having one. The stores themselves look good inside and out. They don’t have that look of a garage sale in a building. You can visit their website and find out more about the stores and...
